Posted on October 8th, 2008

Saturday 27th of September saw 45 children and young people limbering up to take part in the Beacon Back to School Bouldering Competition.

The Beacon Indoor Climbing Wall at Waunfawr provides an excellent opportunity for children and young people to develop their skills, strength and technique, in Bouldering, a sport which involves climbing problems negotiated at a low level without the use of ropes.

The centre, buzzing with energy and a healthy mix of support and competitiveness, played host to both local children and young people as well as those from further a field, especially members of the North West ( of England) Climbing Team.

The competition with separate categories for boys and girls and set in different age groups involves up to 3 attempts to undertake 5 challenges, each challenge becoming a little more difficult.

The results of the 6 to 9 year old girl’s competition saw Natalie Jordan – Rogers from the Wirral coming first and very close on her heels was local girl Kezia Lovick Jones in second place. Sinead Williams was third.

The youngest competitor of the whole competition at 6years of age, Archie Ball ( far left of picture) won the 6 to 9 year old boys competition, with Finn Burnham in second place and Kes Thomas in third place.

Thirteen girls provided a close, exciting battle in the 10 – 12 year old girls category. Local girl, Josie Ball powered into first place, with Ellie Cadwalader in second and Ellissa Bryant in third place.

The winner of the 10 – 12 year old boy’s competition was Michael Hopkins, Charlie Mpetha was second and Conor Elwin was third.
