MOUNTAIN BIKE CLUB GOING FROM STRENGTH TO STRENGTH

Clwb Beicio Mynydd Dyffryn Conwy was established nearly two years ago by keen bikers from the Llanrwst area, supported by the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership. The main aim of the club is to encourage people to get out on their bikes and enjoy the surrounding countryside. The club caters to all comers, from expert downhill racers to complete novices and our rides will be tailored to include all that turn up. We are currently meeting up every Thursday evening in Parc Gwydir in Llanrwst at 6pm and head out into the Forest for a few hours, our rides are very social with plenty of time to stop for a chat. The Thursday evening rides are becoming very popular with up to 15 riders turning up, the riders abilities range from complete novices to those with 20 years riding experience, all come back from the rides with a big smile.

Last Sunday the club held its annual summer social at Nant Bwlch yr Haearn Outdoor Centre, which later this year will become the clubs base. Nearly 30 people turned up and participated in a number of activities, family and beginner led rides, a longer ride for more experienced riders and coaching sessions on the new skills loop at the centre. Over the school summer holidays club members will be running sessions on the skills loop, which includes north shore style obstacles, tabletops, big drops. These sessions aimed at children are organised and subsidised by the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership. Over the next year there will be opportunities for club members to try out the skills loop.

Over the last two years the club has organised a number of activities, from Trailquest competitions, to skills development sessions, bike maintenance sessions and women only rides. Club members also spent five days riding off-road from Conwy to Swansea to raise money for St Davids Hospice and North Wales Air Ambulance. Members are also involved in organising trips out of North Wales. We also have an annual event in November to coincide with Llanast Llanrwst.

Club members are also involved in organising Snowdonia Bike Fest, this year to be held in Beddgelert Forest on 27 September. The fest will be aimed at developing skills for beginners and families with a number of activities planned during the day, guided rides, skills sessions, maintenance sessions. This event is hoped to be an annual event with 2009 fest already being organised in the Dolwyddelan area in May. This event is a follow up to last years event organised by Specialized Bikes which saw 200 people attend over the weekend in Gwydir Forest near Llanrwst.

Club members are also supporting and watching closely the progress of Emyr Davies a local rider who is doing well in Downhill Racing. Members recently went up to Fort William in Scotland to support him, he is currently in Canada competing in the World Championships. He is being followed by a local camerawoman working for welsh childrens television programme Uned 5 who will be producing a programme to be aired soon.

The club currently has nearly 50 members, for information on how to join please go to www.beicio.com, or e-mail post@beicio.com. Our website is currently being upgraded to include a members forum to discuss rides. In the meantime please visit http://clwbbeicio.wetpaint.com.
