Glaslyn Adventure Club receive £5000 towards canoe and kayak equipment

25 February 2008 Glaslyn Adventure Club has recently been successful in securing a capital grant of ?5000 from the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership for the purchase of kayaking and canoe equipment.

The North West Wales Outdoor Partnership is a flagship initiative, funded by the Welsh Assembly Government through the Sports Council for Wales and the three Local Authorities in North West Wales. The aim of the Partnership is to improve opportunities for more local people in North West Wales to achieve their potential through outdoor activities.

Glaslyn Adventure Club was formed back in March 2007 under the guidance and support of the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership. The club aims to provide opportunities for local people to participate in a number of outdoor activities including paddlesports. The club currently has over 50 members, juniors, adults and families.

The money will make a real difference to the club, providing opportunities for Antur Glaslyn to become more independent and not so reliant on local outdoor providers for the hire of equipment. .? Says Tracey Evans, Senior Project Manager

Francis Filzek, Club Chair Says ?The purchase of new open boats will greatly enhance the clubs ability to promote membership and provide activities for local families and junior members. The equipment will also allow the clubs volunteer coaches to continue to work through their coaching program ensuring the clubs sustainability. Club members will also benefit by being able to work through their star awards and paddle power certificates for junior members.

"Experienced club members have currently been over reliant on their own equipment. Lack of equipment in our club has been an obstacle in running activities. This grant will go a long way to equip our current and potential members." Says Francis

During the winter months the club has organised junior kayaking sessions on Sunday afternoons for (3-4pm months and Monday evenings for adult members (8-9pm) at Glaslyn Leisure Centre, Porthmadog). For further details of these activities contact Francis on 01766 771 888.

"People in North Wales have a fantastic natural environment on their doorstep. We want more people to get fit and active in the great North Wales countryside, and this is a fantastic opportunity for families, beginners, and young people wishing to take up paddle sports, to go along to the club and try it out."Says Tracey Evans

Over the last two years, the North West Wales Outdoor Partnership has provided opportunities for over 4000 youngsters and adults to participate in numerous outdoor activity programmes, established 22 NEW outdoor clubs in the region and has provided leadership and work based opportunities for many local young people.
