Gwynedd Peddled to Victory!

Posted on July 11th, 2017

The North Wales Schools Mountain Bike Final took place at Nant Bwlch yr Haearn outdoor centre on June 16th this year.

The competition included a start list of over 60 enthusiastic mountain bikers representing 6 counties of North Wales (Gwynedd, Anglesey, Conwy, Denbigh, Flint and Wrexham)

Starting the event off not too early in the morning gave Welsh Cycling an opportunity to set up a skills course and a spin bike challenge, new for 2017 to make the final a little more interesting.

The mountain bike course was set up through a magnificent existing purpose built track with stunning sceneries. The competition was fierce with all competitors looking to peddle their way victory.

Up first were the time trials where strong cyclists were identified and grouped to ability ready for the line finals. With all teams neck and neck to be winners it went down to the final line races to decide the champions!

These were the results:

Girls 7&8 – 1. South Gwynedd, 2.North Gwynedd, 3. Fflint

Boys  7&8 – 1. South Gwynedd, 2.North Gwynedd, 3.Conwy

Girls 9&10 - 1. South Gwynedd, 2. North Gwynedd

Boys 9&10 – 1.Conwy, 2.North Gwynedd, 3.South Gwynedd

Congratulations to all involved it seemed all competitors enjoyed the day and everyone left with muddy kit and big smiles on their faces. Gwynedd definitely topped the podium in Llanrwst with cyclists eager to continue training and joining local clubs in the near future.

It’s obvious that Mountain Biking is becoming popular in the North and South of the county as there were over 250 students (most ever) that competed at Llanberis and Coed y Brenin to gain a place to represent their county at the final in Llanrwst.

Huge thanks to all partnerships involved in making this event a huge success again this year. Welsh Cycling, Outdoor Partnership and not forgetting the Gwynedd Sports for Life Team for providing an opportunity to secondary school students throughout Gwynedd.

Keep an eye out on the ‘Byw’n Iach Gwynedd’ Facebook page for Mountain Bike opportunities and information on next year’s event. Let’s see how many will be representing Gwynedd at next year’s final?
