Scarborough Extreme

Scarborough Extreme is an extreme sports festival designed to showcase to both residents and visitors the diverse array of sports in Scarborough that challenge participants to their limits.

Our Outdoor Activity Development Officer (OADO) collaborates with North Yorkshire Council to ensure that the perspectives and needs of both community sports clubs and local groups are effectively represented. The 2024 festival attracted over 10,000 visitors and featured a variety of activities, including mountain biking lessons at William Street Car Park, women’s surf improvement lessons at Cayton Bay, and an open day at The Street Rocks.

A significant part of the day revolves around our goal to inspire residents to explore new sports through demonstrations featuring local talent, such as Scarborough’s own Team GB athlete, Miller Temple. This effort is further supported by National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and community sports clubs on the day. In the years to come, we aim to increase the presence of more NGBs and interactive activities throughout the Saturday of the festival, along with community-driven events like skate jams and mountain bike races on Sunday.

For additional information and details on how to participate, please visit https://scarboroughfair.uk/extreme/. We are in the process of organising the 2025 festival, and we have plenty of exciting plans in store!

Ramblers Wellbeing Walks

Sam is the Ramblers Wellbeing Walks co-ordinator for North Yorkshire and supports the various RWW groups across the county. We have also set up a few new walks in Scarborough, targeting those who would like to be more active in the more deprived areas of Eastfield and Barrowcliffe. We are now working with local community groups to help them feed into these walking groups by running targeted shorter walks through North Yorkshire Council’s Community Activator in the area.

We have also been able to link groups to the North York Moors National Park. Taking advantage of their travel fund, we were able to take the AgeUK North Yorkshire Coast & Moors over to Danby for a walk around the area and a bit of tea and cake in their visitor centre. This trip is still talked about in the walking group and we are hoping to make it a regular trip.

Accessible Climbing

We successfully gained funding through the Bruce Wake Charitable Trust and Sport England to enhance the climbing provision along the North Yorkshire coast. We now have staff from East Barnby OEC, The Street Rocks and GuyllieGoat climbing trained through the Climbing for All course. This course covered everything from information gathering to using that information to make sessions accessible for disabled people and hoisting those who need that level of support. Alongside the training, we have a centrally stored set of equipment that the 3 organisations can use to give support for those who are physically disabled.

Town board consultation and representation

Sam is a member of the Scarborough Town Board which is an advisory board to help the council spend £20 million worth of levelling up funding from the UK government. The role of the board is to make sure that sport and physical activity is represented in the towns long-term development plans and to ‘provide opportunities for communities to become more active.’

Through this work and North Yorkshire sport, we were commissioned to consult the local outdoor activity clubs on what they think of Scarborough and what would help them grow as a club. Sam went out to clubs and joined in on some of their regular sessions and spoke with local community anchors to hear their views. This consultation went down very well with the board and is now informing projects moving forward.
